Health Benefits of 55+ Active Adult Communities

One of the many benefits of living in a 55+ active adult community is that you have more opportunities to enjoy social interaction. Many communities have a clubhouse where residents can enjoy getting together at the pool, the fitness center, or a variety of social events.
Many active adults move to these communities because of the opportunities for social interactions. However, many scientific studies are now indicating that an active social life has health benefits as well. As reported in this Harvard Press Release researchers found evidence that "an active social life may slow memory decline." There is evidence that "strong social networks can help to prevent declines in memory." As we age it is even more important to engage in social and community life to maintain our well being.
Another study conducted at Rush University Medical Center and published online in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences (April 2011) indicates that higher levels of social activity are associated with a decreased risk of becoming disabled. It is not clear why social activity plays a role in the development of disability but one possibility is that "social activity may reinforce the neural networks and musculoskeletal function required to maintain functional independence."
These studies demonstrate the link between our social life and our health. What can you do to stay more socially active as you age?
